Traveling to Miami
Miami International Airport is a major airport served by all major US airlines and many foreign ones as well. Fort Lauderdale Airport features cheaper flights from some locations in the US but is over 30 miles from the hotels and the university as opposed to 7 or 8 miles from the Miami International Airport to those locations.
Amtrak goes to Miami but from Washington, for instance, it takes at minimum twenty-three hours.
Auto. In thinking about driving from outside Florida, keep in mind that Miami is near the bottom of a very long peninsula. For instance, on Interstate 95, it takes at least six hours to get from the Georgia border to Miami and potentially much more in heavy traffic.
Getting around within Miami
A wide variety of car rental agencies can be found at both the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Airports. The standard advice to drive defensively is particularly useful for Miami. The Marriott charges for parking but the Hampton does not.
Instructions for prepaid parking at the University. For those of you driving to Miami or renting a car there, we have arranged to pay for parking at the Pavia Garage on campus, just a short walk from the venue (see the maps in the Conference Venue section of this site). To make a reservation and have your parking paid for, click on this link.
It will ask you to pick among options for days attended. On the next screen, it will ask for your license plate number. On the last screen it will request a code. The code for our conference will be included in an email sent to registrants.
Taxis and the regular rideshare options such as Lyft and Uber are widely available.
Public transportation is limited in Miami, but one can take the Metrorail from the Miami International Airport to close to the Hampton Inn (though not the Marriott). At the airport, one takes the Orange Line (which is the only one serving the airport) for ten stops to the Coconut Grove Station. From there one walks across Highway US 1 at SW 27th Ave. (exercise extreme caution—Miami drivers are not pedestrian friendly and can be reckless!), continue south for one block on 27th Ave. and take the first right at SW 28th Ter. The hotel is halfway down that block.
One can also go directly to the University of Miami via the Orange line to the University Station, two stops past Coconut Grove. From there it is a ten-minute walk or a brief shuttle ride to the Lakeside Pavilion. For the University shuttle, stand in front of the Metrorail station without crossing Ponce de Leon, and get off at Stanford Circle. In general, the Metrorail takes much longer than a rideshare or a taxi and crossing US 1 on foot is not for the faint of heart, but it is a cheap option.
For the Metrorail, see here.
